From a young age, I always had a passion for drawing and painting. Art class was my oasis, a place where colors and lines came together to create something magical. Little did I know that this love for visual expression would lead me on a journey to becoming a Graphic Recorder, Visual Facilitator, and Illustrator. This article is a reflection on how I uncovered the world of visual thinking and harnessed its power to bring ideas to life.
What is Visual Thinker?
A visual thinker is someone whose mind thrives on images, shapes, and patterns. Rather than relying solely on words, a visual thinker has an intrinsic ability to process and understand information in a visual or spatial context. This unique way of thinking allows them to create connections and grasp complex concepts through imagery. For me, visual thinking became a bridge between my passion for art and my fascination with problem-solving and continuous learning.
Why do we use it?
Visual thinking isn’t just about creating pretty pictures. It’s a powerful tool that can transform the way we communicate and understand information. As I delved deeper into this world, I realized its immense utility in various fields. In education, visuals help participants engage with topics, making learning more interactive and memorable. In coaching and business contexts, visual facilitation can clarify ideas during meetings and brainstorming sessions. From tech to healthcare, visual thinking transcends boundaries, making complex ideas accessible to a wider audience.
Where does it come from?
Despite pursuing a technical professional path after school, including studying Computer Science in faculty, and working for 17 years in large international companies like Oracle, Ericsson, and Vodafone, my love for art and visual expression never stoped. From being a System Engineer to transitioning into Software Engineering, Solution Architecture, and Leadership roles, I brought a diverse skill set to the table. However, in 2020, everything changed when I attended my first training course on visual thinking.
This experience opened my eyes to the vast potential of translating thoughts into visuals. As I absorbed knowledge about Graphic Recording, Visual Facilitation, and Illustration, I found myself weaving together my artistic skills with new techniques. The blend of creativity and structure was exhilarating, and I knew I had found my calling.
Where can I get some?
The beauty of visual thinking is that it’s accessible to everyone. You don’t need to be a seasoned artist to start incorporating visuals into your life. While there are numerous resources available online, including introductory courses and advanced workshops, I take it a step further. As a provider of Visual Thinking training, I offer a dedicated space for individuals and teams to not just learn about visual thinking, but to become adept visual thinkers themselves. Discovering the world of visual thinking has not only allowed me to merge my passion for art with practical applications but has also shown me the transformative potential of visuals in various aspects of life. As I continue to help others unlock their visual thinking potential, I’m reminded of the universal truth that images are a language that transcends barriers and sparks understanding.
